Chemistry
Chemistry is taught by experienced specialist teaching staff in a dedicated classroom suite with attached preparation areas and a full-time technician. There are newly installed fume cupboards, as well as digital projectors and whiteboards with full internet access. At Key Stage 3 the Schemes of Work engage and challenge pupils, developing practical skills to complement a sound theoretical understanding of the subject. The Department have a strong belief in giving pupils ‘hands-on’ practical experiences. This prepares pupils for the rigours of a full GCSE course in Chemistry at GCSE and beyond. It is a popular subject at both GCSE and AS/A2 Level, with excellent results. The syllabus followed at GCSE is the Edexcel 2011 GCSE Chemistry course (2CH01), with the AS/A2 Level syllabus also from Edexcel (8/9CH01). In tandem with the GCSE and A Level courses, the department offers a number of Extended Learning Opportunities, including ‘Top of the Bench’ competitions, Chemistry Festival competitions at Reading University and attendance at Spectroscopy Masterclasses.
