Spanish

Spanish is taught by three experienced modern foreign language graduates, one of whom is a native Spanish speaker.  Each member of staff has a particular area of interest and expertise, which contributes to the diversity of approach and study within the subject.

Housed in three specialist Modern Foreign Language rooms, all fitted with an interactive whiteboard and PC.  The College and Departmental libraries contain a range of invaluable resources for all year groups, particularly DVDs of well known films for all age groups, materials used in preparation for GCSE and AS/A2 speaking and writing presentations.  The subscriptions to linguascope.co.uk  and espanol-extra.co.uk and Kerboodle offer superb resources used for Key Stage 3 and the examination courses.  The department follows the new Zoom! course published by OUP from Year 8, the AQA Spanish GCSE course and at AS/A2, the Edexcel specification.

The teaching of Lower School Spanish, starting in Year 8, seeks to provide an opportunity for all pupils that will equip them for their future in an increasingly international job market.  It aims to give those who do not follow Spanish at GCSE a rudimentary grasp of the language, and to those who do a sound appreciation of the importance of comprehending and communicating in this tongue.

In terms of extended opportunities, the department runs a highly successful exchange programme with the Salesian School in Sarriá, Barcelona, providing not only  the opportunity to visit the Galeria Olympica and other sites of historical and cultural importance, but also for the first time in 2011 work experience in a company in Barcelona. In addition, forty five Year 10 and 11 Spanish students visited Seville in February 2011.

Please visit our Photo Gallery to get a flavour of the five French and Spanish trips run this year, and of the European Languages Week held in September.

For further information please do not hesitate to contact the Spanish Department through the College Office at smitha@salesiancollege.com.
