History

The History Department is housed within a dedicated Humanities Suite. Both members of staff are experienced practitioners and have at their disposal interactive whiteboards, full internet access and make use of the ICT suite available in the Library.

At Key Stage 3, pupils cover a diverse range of topics including the Norman Conquest and Medieval England; the English Civil War; the Atlantic slave trade and its abolition; Britain and the World Wars. At GCSE, pupils follow the AQA syllabus B. History remains a popular option choice at GCSE. Results are excellent and many students continue their studies to A Level. At AS/A2, the OCR specification A course is taught. The topics covered at AS level are British Foreign and Imperial Policy (1945-90) and the First Crusade and the Crusader States (1073-1130) At A2 level, students undertake a coursework module on the War of the Roses (1450-85) and a themes paper on Civil Rights in the USA (1865 to 1992).

In addition, a number of extended learning opportunities are provided. These include designing and building model castles and siege engines in Year 7, a cross curricular competition in War Art and the making of history documentary films. Year 9 students also have the opportunity to participate in a school visit to the First World War Battlefields. Regular support is provided for all students at lunchtimes.
