The Geography Department is housed in specialist Humanities classrooms and is taught by two experienced teachers. The dedicated classrooms have full internet access and use of interactive whiteboard technology. In addition, the department makes full use of the ICT facilities available throughout the College.
At Key Stage 3 students engage in a variety of interesting and challenging material, including visits to Alice Holt Woodland Park. Moving to GCSE, the syllabus currently studied is the AQA A scheme and is taught through a variety of means, with significant input coming from case study and off-site research, for example a three day residential course in the Peak District. At AS/A Level, students follow the AQA course and engage in a diverse range of study tasks, including extensive use of web links, online resources and off site case study. It remains a popular option both at GCSE and at A Level.
In addition, the Geography Department provides extensive extended learning opportunities. Lower VIth students spend time investigating aspects of physical and human geography in Somerset. It also offers the possibility to enter national creative writing competitions and the local inter-schools ‘Worldwise’ quiz. Our students also engage in more adventurous activities such as orienteering and caving, in order to afford pupils studying the subject a diverse range opportunities.
