Visit to Poetry Live at the Hexagon, Reading

On Thursday 26 January, all Year 11 students attended the annual excursion to Poetry Live, an event which provides GCSE students the unique opportunity to hear readings and discussions of poems written by some of the poets studied for the forthcoming examinations. Amongst a range of poets, the year group was treated to readings from the current poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and the dry humour of Simon Armitage to the enigmatic John Agard who is always guaranteed to give a charismatic and thought-provoking performance. Agard left students with the message of not only studying poetry for their English exams but to understand and appreciate poetry for themselves. The Chief Examiner for AQA gave a talk in which he advised students on how to gain higher marks in their English exams. Whilst answering questions, he demonstrated with model answers written by other students. Once again, Poetry Live was an opportunity not to be missed.
