Salesian win Year 7 District Cup Final!

Salesian win Year 7 District Cup Final!

On Tuesday 3 May, the College’s Year 7 Football team won the Aldershot and District Cup at Aldershot Football Club.  Last time Salesian won this cup was in 1973! The match against Tomlinscote School was very competitive with Salesian playing some lovely passing football in the first half.  They were unlucky not to take the lead on more than one occasion during the opening stages, with both Rory McMichael and Louie Gilpin going close.  Samuel Henneberg and Ayotunde Adelakun were causing problems for Tomlinscote School and both Gregory Morley and Jacob Daniels played well.  With the impressive central midfield of Patrick Leahy, Captain Conor Fitzmaurice and goal scorer Louie Gilpin dominating possession, Tomlinscote School struggled to get into the game in the first half.  When they did the central defence of Jacob Webb and Ryan Blake and impressive goalkeeper Matthew Russell quickly dealt with it and got the ball back for Salesian.

Salesian substitutes Rory Chiplin, Michael Try and Spencer Wynn all came on to add some fresh legs and impetus and one run from Michael Try down the right wing nearly opened the scoring for Salesian.  With the impressive Conor Fitzmaurice dominating in the middle and being a real driving force in the Salesian midfield, the breakthrough happened.  A ball down the left was partially cleared and was picked up by Louie Gilpin who beat his man and hit a right-footed shot from 10 yards that flew past the Tomlinscote goalkeeper and into the net off the underside of the bar to send Salesian players, management and supporters wild with excitement!  With seconds to go Rory McMichael thought he had doubled the lead but a linesman's flag ruled out the effort.  Although Salesian were not to be denied and after 2 minutes of injury time was played the whistle went and Salesian had won the Year 7 cup for the first time in 38 years!

Final score Salesian 1 (Gilpin) Tomlinscote 0

Man of the match – Jacob Webb, although there were 15 other heroes!

Congratulations to the team on an impressive season which has seen them win the District 5-aside, the District Cup and get to the latter stages of both the County Cup and South East of England 5-aside.  The team end with a season record of Played 19, won 16, 1 draw and 2 losses, great work young men!
