Salesian College crowned British Schools' Biathlon Champions 2011

On Sunday 27 March, Salesian College’s Year 10 Biathlon team won Gold in the finals of the British Schools' Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.  This Championship involved the best Biathletes (Swimming and Running) from Schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Year 10 team of Richard Allen, Justin Hanson and Owen Wagstaff ran fantastic times in the first discipline which was the 1000 metres.  Justin Hanson took an amazing 20 seconds off his previous best time, with Owen Wagstaff and Richard Allen knocking 10 and 5 seconds respectively off their best times.

In the second event, swimming, the boys put in another outstanding performance and after the scores were officially confirmed by the British Schools' Biathlon Officials, it was announced that Richard Allen (5th), Owen Wagstaff (15th) and Justin Hanson (22nd) had claimed Gold medals in the team event with a huge combined score of 8052 points. Salesian College’s Year 10 Biathlon team were crowned British Schools Biathlon Champions 2011, the best team in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in their age group.

The Year 7 team, comprising of Adam Morgan (39th), Oliver Broad (44th) and Rhys Holifield (47th) put up an excellent fight to finish as the 8th placed team scoring 6798 points with some personal bests being achieved along the way.

The Year 9 team of Reade Whiteman (22nd), Elliot Broad (26th) and Samuel Gallagher (41st) achieved 7304 points and 6th placed team overall. A fantastic achievement from all the boys involved to reach and compete at such a high class event and perform admirably.

Mr Patrick Wilson, Headmaster commented “This was a remarkable achievement by the Year 10 boys, especially as both Richard and Owen had only a few hours sleep having taken part in the National Cross Country Finals the previous day at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland.  It was at the National Cross Country Finals, that Salesian College came third in the UK and were the best performing Catholic School in England.  I am very proud of the College’s recent sporting achievements and these two National Titles in one weekend are testament to the dedication of both the boys and the PE staff.”
