Year 9 Under 14 National ISA rugby sevens tournament
On Friday 11 March the Under 14 rugby squad travelled to
Having arrived in excellent time they found the sun out and the pitches in super condition and celebrated by winning their first pool match against North Cestrian School 38-7 with Jack Franklin scoring a hat-trick of tries, Tom Hosty a pair and one for Matthew Wilson.
The second match was against
Match three was a daunting task. St James, Twickenham looked to be the team to watch in the pool and they had some very talented players and a lot of pace. The boys stuck to the task but had no answer when the ball went wide and were well beaten 0-43.
Realising that they were really playing for the runners-up spot to secure a place in the Plate semi-finals later, the team had to win the next two pool matches. The demoralising loss previously though had taken its toll and a game that should have been won against St Nicholas School, Old Harlow was lost 5-14 despite a try from captain, Adam Peever.
As the results in the other games were quite tight, a win in the last match against Gads Hill left the possibility of progression so it was all or nothing in match five. Some very tired legs worked extra hard and the opposition gave away nothing. The score stood 10-12 to Gads Hill, Peever and Franklin having scored one each again, with one play left when a succession of passes and excellent support and retention finally led to second half substitute, Matthew Golding crashing over to win 15-12.
A great effort proved not enough and the boys missed the second place spot but they had finished on a high and certainly done themselves justice. They scored 75 points in five matches with 13 tries between them. The whole squad made strong contributions and James Hardy was named ‘Forward of the Day’ and Jack Franklin ‘Back of the Day’. The other members of the team were: Adam Peever, Cameron Hogg, Christopher Loten, Drew Lundie, Harry Green, Matthew Golding, Matthew Wilson, Oliver Godden, Scott Bosher and Tom Hosty. Well done all!!
