Blue Fusion Competition

Blue Fusion Competition

On Wednesday 16 March, six year 10 students (William Booth, William Fuller, Daniel Smallbone, Max Sears, George Wright and Xiao-Lee Xiao) represented the College at this event at IBM’s Hursley site.

IBM is involved in many innovative research projects around the theme of a “Smarter Planet”. This week is also National Science and Engineering week and so an appropriate time to have this competition with a theme of “Communication”.  On arrival, the students from sixteen schools listened to an inspirational presentation by Kevin Warwick of Reading University entitled “The Cyborg Experiments”.  Kevin was the first human to have an implant put into his to body that was able to interface with a computer. In his fascinating talk, he explained the cutting edge research into linking humans with technology and the many anticipated benefits of this.

The students took part in eight fun and challenging activities throughout the day for which they received marks for their results as well as their team working skills.  Our students scored highly for their team work in every activity. The excitement mounted to fever pitch when at lunchtime they were placed second overall!  The activity “Communication for the Nations” involved setting up appropriate satellite and communications across the world but to a budget and in the wake of traumatic natural disasters. “Blind Maze” involved being able to communicate effectively to partners who were unable to see the screen against an array of different obstacles. In final activity of the day “Firewall” the students had to write program rules to prevent viruses from entering the system yet minimising the prevention of access of useful information to the system. This required lots of logical thinking and team discussion. The finale was a play off of all teams work on the large screen in the lecture hall.

At the end of the day, the Salesian team came ninth overall but the score difference between all teams was very small. They should be congratulated for performing so well and in many cases against Year 11 teams. More importantly, they should remember their experience for some time to come.
