Salesian Secure County Cup Soccer Glory!

Salesian Secure County Cup Soccer Glory!

On Thursday 31 March, Salesian College secured their first success in the County Cup for football since 1985 with a hard fought success over King’s, Winchester at Aldershot Football Club.

The game started with Salesian under huge pressure from King’s and only two fine saves from Salesian keeper Ryan Simmons prevented King’s taking the lead.  Michael Gregory was like a rock at the back for Salesian and gradually his performance lifted the team and Salesian started to get into the game.  With strong performances from Callum Chiplin and Benjamin Rosoman, with Rosoman going close twice to opening the scoring Salesian began to grow in confidence.  After nineteen minutes Salesian took the lead with a well delivered free-kick from the right from Harry McGill that Robert Deans turned in at the second attempt to spark wild celebrations!

As the first half drew to a close it needed some excellent blocks and last ditch tackles from Salesian captain David Richardson and Domenico Iorio at the back to maintain the Salesian lead.

In the early stages of the second half, two powerful runs by Connor Giltrap very nearly opened up the King’s defence.  The game was hard fought with Jack Bull and Robert Deans putting in huge shifts up top for Salesian.  At the back Michael Gregory and Sam Jefferies continued to perform heroics and defy King’s with the inspirational pair of Callum Chiplin and Benjamin Rosoman in front providing fantastic cover.  Second half substitute Benjamin Cave and captain David Richardson at right and left back respectively were starting to influence play and Richardson especially was putting in some huge challenges.  Matthew Wyke, Oliver East and Adam Cauldwell all entered the fray during the second period and helped greatly in maintaining the Salesian lead.

With time running out King’s attempted to score the goal needed to take the game into extra-time, but Salesian repelled them and held on for victory with the magnificent Michael Gregory being the game’s outstanding performer in a match of 17 heroes from Salesian.

This was the first Salesian County success since 1985 when the Under 12 side captained by Paul Rossiter defeated Romsey 2-1 - it was well worth the wait though!!!

Many thanks to Aldershot FC and Andy Nunn and Bob Green for providing a fantastic facility and pitch for the memorable night.  Head of PE, Gareth Cousins said ‘I am so proud of the boys, they deserved the victory and showed a huge desire to deliver, brilliant’.
