National Salesian Schools Student Voice Conference

Following their recent election to the Year 11 Student Council, six students accepted an invitation to attend the National Salesian Schools Student Voice Conference. This represented an excellent chance to continue our good work with senior Student Council members from other Salesian schools across the country and to address some of the issues and challenges that they face.
On Saturday 2 October, the students listened to introductory presentations by the other schools on the work of their school councils before sharing some of the student lead projects that have taken place at Farnborough in the last twelve months. The school groups were then split up and the students worked throughout the day with the other Salesian boys and girls to form brief presentations on leadership qualities and then constructed a ‘mission statement’ for student voice in Salesian Schools. These activities were punctuated with chances to use the recreation facilities and to mix and bond with the pupils from a very diverse range of backgrounds.
By coincidence, a group of volunteers from the BOVA (Bosco Volunteer Action) organisation were in residence at the same time at Savio House including former College vice School Captain, Simon Treacy, who was prevailed upon to talk to the younger students about his voluntary work at an orphanage in Bolivia during his university time. Simon, now a trainee solicitor in London, gave an excellent presentation and highlighted the leadership opportunities that exist within the global Salesian family.
