ISA Rugby National Seven-a-side Tournaments

ISA Rugby National Seven-a-side Tournaments

On Friday 12th March the Under 16 and Under 14 rugby sevens squads, accompanied by Mr Reeve and Mr Moore, travelled to Warwickshire for the annual ISA Sevens Tournaments.

The Under 16 squad played at Old Leamingtonians RFC. They acquitted themselves well in their pool matches although were only able to win one match against Shoreham School. This meant that they were in the Plate knock-out event in the afternoon. They played Stafford G.S. in a very close game and looked as if they may do enough to progress but the opposition scored a couple of break away tries to bring the day to a close for the boys. Mr Reeve was pleased how the players had come on throughout the day and many of them are staying at the College for the sixth form which bodes well for the strength of nest seasons senior rugby squad. The following played (tries in brackets):

Willem Dane (3) – Adam Murphy (5) – Chris Parnaby (5) – Shaan Joshi (2) – Toby Hurst (2) – Steven Cain (8 con) – Harvey Mills (2 + 1con) – Josef Egerton – Dahlin Mony – Jack Cafferkey – Jackson Cherry.

The Under 14 event was close by at Princethorpe College.  The squad played four progressively tough pool games beating St James’, Grimsby (36-0), Hull School (21-14) and Dixie Grammar School (17-14). They then faced the hosts, Princethorpe, in a decider for top of the pool. Princethorpe were very good and our players made them work hard but lost five tries to nil. As runners-up in the pool, we faced the winners of pool 2, St James’, Twickenham in the Cup quarter-final. We had watched them dominating their pool on the next door pitch throughout the morning and this may have been why the starting team, a bit tired and bruised by now, allowed them two easy tries at the outset of the match. The team rallied in the second half but the damage was done and they lost 14-29. It was very pleasing to have won 3 and lost 2 and to have scored 88 points whilst conceding 84. The boys learnt a new style of rugby and were very positive about the experience. The following played:

Robert Deans (4 tries, 8 on) – Danny Meade (3) – Paul Neale (2) – Alex Murray (1 try + 1 con) - Domenico Iorio (1) – Isaac Cowdrill (1) – Lewis Ratigan (2) – Matthew Comfort – Oliver Spite – Michael Williams – Jason Tambyapin.
