Success at the UKMT Team challenge
Salesian College came third in the regional final of the UK Mathematical Trust (UKMT) Team Challenge held at Furze Platt School, Maidenhead. A team consisting of two year 9 boys, James Astles and Cameron Royle and two year 8 boys, Kumar Dixit and Ben Rothwell spent a whole day competing in the regional final against twenty nine other schools from Surrey, Berkshire and London. They had to solve a range of problems in pairs and as a team, including a Mathematical relay race -against the clock and also against the other teams.
The UK Mathematical Trust aim is to advance the education of Mathematics providing enrichment activities. As well as the individual challenges which are available to all pupils in the United Kingdom, there are team events for the most able mathematicians to compete against other schools in their regions.
The boys worked hard preparing for this event at lunchtimes. Apart from learning or recognising the prime, Fibonacci and triangular numbers, they trained on general questions making sure that they were familiar with the different parts of the competition. Their hard work and preparation paid off and they came a very creditable third place just behind Reading Blue Coats and St Paul’s School.
