The Great Escape!
The Great Escape
Salesian College’s Year 9 Football team came back from 3-0 in the last fifteen minutes to take a place in the Hampshire Cup Semi-Final.
After dominating early play Salesian fell behind to a well-taken goal past ‘keeper Ryan Simmons as the first half drew to a close. Ollie Spite and Rob Deans went close to levelling the score just before the half-time break after good work from Matt Wyke.
The second half was a disaster in the opening ten minutes for Salesian with Upper Shirley scoring twice more to take a 3-0 lead. Salesian needed something back quick and they got that through ace forward Jack Bull, who was kept on the bench due to an ankle injury. He injected fire into the team and Dom Iorio hooked a shot in to make the score 3-1. Time was running out but Spite linked well with Bull and Bull finished in style to make it 3-2. Then late into injury time Connor Giltrap curled a delightful shot into the top corner of the Upper Shirley net to take the game into extra-time.
Extra-time was hard fought but that man Jack Bull was at it again scoring to make it 4-3 to Salesian after a great run and finish!
With the defence standing firm under great pressure, David ‘Sparrow’ Richardson, Jefferies, Gregory & Iorio were dealing with all Upper Shirley threw at them and Ryan Simmons in goal was quick off his line when he needed to be. Adam Cauldwell and Ollie East were working hard out wide and Ben Rosoman and Callum Chiplin were grafting hard in the middle. The final whistle went and Salesian were into the Semi-Finals. Well played lads the Great Escape was pulled off – not so close next time though please!
