Year 10 Geographers in the Peak District

Over the penultimate weekend of the summer term, forty Year 10’s visited the Peak District as part of their GCSE Geography course. The weather was uncharacteristically hot and this added a new dimension to the challenging hikes through mountainous terrain. The first walk explored the superb limestone landscape of Lathkill dale which is both spectacular and internationally important for its fauna and flora.
The next day involved a walk up Mam tor and along the impressive ridge to Lose Hill which offered the students views in all directions. However, the stop at Speedwell cavern was equally popular as the group explored the cave systems underground by boat in disused lead mining tunnels.
The main focus of the trip was to investigate the impact of tourism on Castleton. This is then written up as the Controlled Assessment component of the GCSE course. Our students impressed with their conscientious surveying and thanks to the sunshine there were plenty of tourists available to answer their questions. On returning to school, the students spent most of Monday typing up their notes and turning the data into graphs for their projects.
