Year 9 win thriller in the mud!

In awful conditions Salesian College’s Under 14 came of age and won a hard fought and at times bad tempered game of Aldershot & District Football 3-2 versus Yateley. In driving rain and thick mud Salesian started well with Ben Rosoman and Callum Chiplin setting a high tempo in centre midfield. Slightly against the run of play Yateley took the lead when a corner was half cleared it was returned with interest into the bottom right hand corner of Harry McGill’s net to give Yateley the lead. However, Salesian were working very hard with the impressive Matt Wyke and Connor Giltrap supplying some lovely touches and crosses down the flanks. Just before half time a flighted free-kick from Salesian District full-back and captain David ‘Sparrow’ Richardson was dropped by the Yateley ‘keeper and a combination of Matt Wyke and Dom Iorio bundled it in, with Iorio claiming the last touch.
Half-time 1-1
The second half was end to end with Jack Bull and Ollie Spite proving a real threat up front and Ben Rosoman especially in the midfield having a magnificent time in the mud. Salesian took the lead when Michael Gregory bundled in a Ollie Spite corner and then Jack Bull chased a back pass in the mud after an expert tip from the Gaffer before the game to give Salesian a 3-1 lead. Harry McGill was having a great game in goal for Salesian and with Sam Jefferies and Michael Gregory excellent at the back and Dom Iorio and David Richardson masterful at right and left back Salesian looked good for the win.
District player Sam Hutchins of Yateley though was having a great game and was pulling the strings and with just five minutes left Yateley pulled a goal back to make it a nail biting finish. A tactical switch saw Rob Deans have a strong last fifteen minutes at right midfield and Oxford’s finest Connor Giltrap was showing great balance in the mud. The Salesian team was just fantastic in the conditions and have really set a bar that they must now step up to with big District and County Quarter-Final’s ahead in the coming 14 days. The final whistle was blown and Salesian had taken a big scalp. The boys were buzzing as were the parents and the coaching team Gaffer Cousins, Coach Bunyan and Head Water boy Mr Butler – fantastic effort and thanks to all the squad even Adam Cauldwell and Ollie East who did not get on but have played a big part this season and will do for the rest of the season.
