Basketball Success!!

Basketball Success!!

A busy week of basketball has seen huge success for 4 year groups. Qualifying for 4 finals was quite an achievement, but winning all 4 was just unbelievable. Following the success of year 10 on Monday, the year 7, 8 and 9’s were all involved in finals.

Year 7 have had a very successful season in both the league and cup, losing just one game all year to Wavell by 2 points. On Wednesday, we were up against Weydon and Wavell in the triangular cup final. As the boys arrived to watch the first game get under way between the hosts Weydon and Wavell, the boys started to get worried as Wavell scored basket after basket to take the final score to 26-0. We realised we had a task on our hands! The first game got underway with Josh Tetlow being asked to do a defensive man to man job on their best player. This seemed to be working with Will Hooper getting into his stride with 4 points in quick succession, opening up a 6 point lead at the break. Wavell got within 2 points, before Will Hooper and Ed Grosvenor sunk a basket each to take victory in a nervy, but thrilling first game. The final score ended 10-6 with Will receiving man of the match for his 8 points.

With Weydon’s confidence very low, we new if we could get a lead they would struggle to come back. This is exactly what happened with Jack Jefferies receiving man of the match for his 6 points, together with Ed Grosvenor and Christian Tepper adding to the score. Salesian went out comfortable 10-0 winners and thoroughly deserved the title of Year 7 Basketball District Cup winners 2010. Thank you to all the boys for a successful season.

Squad: Will Hooper, Ed Grosvenor, Jack Jefferies, Will Parfitt, Ollie Copeland, Lawrence Jepp, Christian Tepper, Josh Tetlow, Michael Parnaby and Rishi Shah

Year 8 had a somewhat easier time of things in the final at Robert Mays School. Again, this was a fantastic season all round, with the boys winning all games apart from one against Ash Manor. The tournament started with a game against Cove, with Salesian getting slowly into their stride with a 14-2 victory. The star of the show, like on many occasions was the captain Matt Golding with the man of the match award. Ross McMichael was also starting to hit his stride with 8 points. In the second match Salesian really started to turn it on, with Ross McMichael again dominating with a man of the match performance 12 points. Others contributing to baskets were Matt Golding, Mark Tucker, Cameron Hogg, Jonny Pereira and Scott Bosher as Salesian went out comfortable 22-4 winners. This meant another great season was topped off with Silverware and the title of Year 8 District Cup Champions 2010.

So the pressure was really on the coach of the Year 9 team (Mr Bunyan) to bring back the trophy after Mr Yates (Year 7 and 8) and Mr Cousins (Year 10) had already locked theirs away in the trophy cabinet. After being given the eyes of success from Mr Yates before they left, the boys and Mr bunyan didn’t disappoint. Our first game was against a Wavell side that had previously beaten us in the league. Wavell were high in confidence after beating Weydon in the initial game and it was up to our boys to again spoil the party. They did just that with Lewis Rattigan sinking a 2 pointer with 10 seconds left on the clock with the scores level. Salesian went out 6-4 winners. In the second game, Weydon put up much resistance, always coming back at the boys and putting us under pressure. In the end, Salesian went out comfortable winners and Year 9 district cup champions 2010. Emotionally, Mr Bunyan commented after, “We were under massive pressure to bring back the goods, however the boys did the College proud, well done!”

Squad: Lewis Rattigan, Richard Allen, Michael Williams, Dan Meade, Alfie Walters, Jack Bull, Matt Wyke, Josh Pope, Owen Wagstaff, Joel Grist and Paul Neale.

Congratulations to everyone that contributed to an excellent season. We await the league final standings.
