Year 10 Basketball District Cup Final

Year 10 Basketball District Cup Final

Led by captain George ‘Lebron’ Packer Salesian went over to Wavell School to play Ash Manor and Wavell in the Year 10 District Schools Cup Final for Basketball.  In the first game Salesian started slowly versus Ash Manor but slowly opened up a lead.  George Packer leading the way with 10 points and 3 assists, Peter ‘Shaq’ Hull scored 7 points and secured many rebounds for Salesian, as did Joe Byrne.  With Matt Sanderson chipping in with his first points of the season Salesian scorched away to win 24-2 and secure a place in the Final to play Wavell.  Further points came from Lewis Rattigan (3), JordanKobe’ Foley (2).   George Packer was named MVP by Coach Cousins and he was very impressed by his first-class squad and the top draw attitude displayed by all.

The final was a chance to avenge the only defeat Packer’s team had suffered this season – a narrow 34-32 reverse to hosts Wavell.  The Salesian boys did not disappoint and turned on their best performance of the season, winning 32-7.  Packer was again instrumental scoring a further 10 points, to take his tally for the season to a fantastic 102!  However, Lewis Rattigan stole the show with an MVP performance scoring 8 points and displaying some magnificent on court skills.  With Joe Byrne chipping in with 2 points, Jordan Foley (4), Peter Hull (6) and Ben Tucker (2) and Ryan Newhouse showing high energy and work-rate all over the court Salesian earned a memorable victory and secured the title of District Basketball Champions for Year 10.

A special mention for Peter Hull who again was magnificent, although he was not MVP on the night his performances this season have been terrific – ‘Shaq’ has been the man on many occasions for Salesian.  As well as Peter, Jordan Foley and George Packer’s efforts have made the team strong and delivered terrific on court basketball ability, mixed in with mighty fine support from Ben Tucker, Joe Byrne, Ryan Newhouse, Jack Glasscock, Phil Blackwood, Lewis Rattigan and Matt Sanderson it has been a season to remember.

A happy Coach Cousins would like to congratulate his squad – it has been a real pleasure coaching you this season, some fantastic performances and commitment from the whole squad.

End of season statistics are impressive with 7 wins from 8 games scoring 226 points and conceding just 112.  Top points scorers were George Packer (102), Jordan Foley (48) and Peter Hull (43), but the squad has been immense – very well done, coach and captain Lebron very happy tonight with the troops!
