Sightsavers Walk

On Sunday 5 December 2010 sixty pupils, parents and staff from Salesian College completed a five mile sponsored walk in aid of the ‘Vision 2020:- The Right to Sight’ campaign, which targets preventable and curable blindness in developing nations. The programme is run by Standard Chartered Bank to support charities such as Sightsavers International and they match all of the funds pledged to this appeal.
The circular walk started at Frensham Pond visitor centre and the preceding cold conditions had left a good covering of snow on the ground, which gave the route a distinctively festive feel. The adults enjoyed the snowy scenery, whilst the more young at heart were happy to pepper each other with snowballs. The route followed tracks through the heathland surrounding the pond at first and then crossed over to the neighbouring woodland and countryside. It was fantastic to see so many young siblings joining in and having a great time with their families, whilst raising money for such a worthy cause.
The sponsorship money is already coming in and I suspect that we will pass £25,000 in total for the five years of this initiative. Our donation is the largest non-corporate one made to this appeal on an annual basis in the country and I wish to record my thanks to everyone who took part and raised some of that money. I still have a target to get over 100 walkers out next year, so please join in!
