Henry Wanyoike Visits Activity Week

On Wednesday 14 July, the boys in Years 7 and 8 who were enjoying Activity week at the College had a visit from double Paralympic gold medallist, Henry Wanyoike from Kenya and his guide, Joseph Kibunja. Henry’s visit was in his capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for the Sightsavers charity which the College has supported through annual fund raising events such as our sponsored walk for a number of years.
Henry, who is blind, has achieved gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Sydney and Athens Paralympics and holds the world record for the marathon for a blind athlete (2:31.31). Both Henry and Joseph spoke with the staff and boys for some time about the valuable contribution that the fundraising does in Kenya and other parts of the world and urged them to make the most of their talents. He also presented Mr Moore with a copy of his biography, ‘Victory Despite Blindness’, for the College library as a thank you gift. Henry and Joseph went running with the boys who seemed to be doing fine for the first two laps of the playing fields but then were shown genuine class as the Paralympians strode away with only Mr Smith able to live with them!
Many thanks to Henry Wanyoike and Joseph Kibunja for giving of their time so generously and to Mr Steve Wish of Standard Chartered Bank, who support the Sightsavers charity, for arranging the visit.
